PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago -- Santos de Guapiles recorded a 2-1 victory over host San Juan Jabloteh on Tuesday night to clinch a spot in the 2017 Scotiabank Champions League quarterfinals.
Eder Solorzano connected on the game-winner for Santos at Hasely Crawford Stadium, giving the Costa Rican side an 8-3 aggregate triumph in the Round of 16 series.
Needing to win by four goals in order to have any hope of advancing, San Juan Jabloteh drew first blood in the third minute. Adrian Reid drilled a penalty kick past goalkeeper Alejandro Gomez after defender Pablo Arboine tripped Nathan Lewis in the top-left side of the box.
Slowly, but surely, Santos regained its composure and grew more assertive. It paid off in the 33rd minute as Jose Garro got between two defenders and headed home Wilmer Azofeifa's long free kick past goalkeeper Shemel Lousion to equalize at 1-1.
A miscue by Lousion allowed Santos to take the lead in the 72nd minute. Leonardo Adams collected the ball after Lousion spilled Diego Diaz's 22-yard effort. Rather than shoot, Adams passed back to Solorzano, who finished from 10-yards out.
Santos, which has seen eight different players account for its eight goals, will next face the Honduras Progreso-Chorrillo FC winner. The quarterfinal, first-leg encounters will be played August 15-17
