ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – Alianza of El Salvador held off a strong challenge from Costa Rican side AD San Carlos to clinch a spot in the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League despite a 1-0 San Carlos victory in the second leg of 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinals on Thursday night at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
The result earned the Cuscatlecos a 2-1 win on aggregate and a place in the SCL semifinals, plus the 2020 SCCL.
San Carlos had the best chances of the first 45 minutes, first via a free kick in the 32’ and then another shot right before halftime that struck both posts.
The home side continued to push for a goal to cut down their deficit on aggregate, but Alianza GK Rafael Garcia made a number of key stops to keep things scoreless.
However, a red card to Alianza MF Alexander Larin in the 77’ opened a door for San Carlos and Fernando Brenes was there to poke home a shot after a rebound to hand San Carlos a 1-0 lead in the 87’.
But Garcia and the Alianza defense held firm the rest of the way to claim the aggregate victory.
