SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – The 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League semifinals kick off on Thursday with an intriguing first leg clash between Alianza of El Salvador and Motagua of Honduras at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador.
The journey for the hosts started in the Preliminary Round and since then they have collected impressive wins over San Francisco of Panama (6-1), Tauro of Panama (2-1) and Costa Rica’s San Carlos (2-1).
At the center of it all for Alianza has been MF Marvin Monterroza. A tireless worker in the middle of the field to help his team win possession, Monterroza has also contributed two goals during the tournament.
Aiding the cause in attack is dangerous FW Raul Penaranda, who has three goals in the 2019 SCL, including a goal in each first leg.
Yet if there is any team that has the skill and strength to snuff out the Alianza attack, it is Motagua. The Catracho club registered a pair of clean sheets in the previous round, a 2-0 aggregate victory over Waterhouse of Jamaica.
There is plenty of motivation inside the Motagua locker room as well after their near miss in last year’s SCL final against Herediano.
Thursday’s match marks just the third ever meeting between the two clubs, with the previous two encounters taking place in 1997 in which they both ended in 1-1 draws.
