PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Arabe Unido earned a place in the 2017/18 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, scoring once in each half to defeat Plaza Amador, 2-0, in the 2016 Panamanian Apertura final on Saturday night in front of 16,687 fans at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez.

The domestic title completed a historic 2016 for the Expreso Azul, which also advanced to the 2016/17 SCCL quarterfinals thanks in large part to a pair of wins over three-time champion Monterrey.

Abdiel Macea scored the game’s first goal in the 44th minute, when he headed home from five-yards out off a right-sided cross by Angel Patrick.

In the 70th minute the scorer, Enrico Small netted an insurance goal, heading in unmarked from close range after Macea's cross from right bounced just in front of the six-yard box. It was Small’s 16th goal of the season.

It was Arabe Unido’s 15th top-flight title and its record 13th in the Liga Panameña de Fútbol.
