PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Arabe Unido and Santos de Guapiles played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their 2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF League semifinal series at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez on Wednesday night.
Scoring opportunities were few and far between in the first CONCACAF final-four encounter ever played by either side.
Both goalkeepers produced spectacular saves to preserve shutouts.
Within a two-minute span in the first half, Santos custodian Bryan Morales was assessed a yellow card in the 38th minute, when he took down Daniel Ortiz in the box. Two minutes later, he turned hero, thwarting Carlos Small's subsequent penalty kick by diving right and raising his left hand to deflect the ball over the crossbar.
Morales’ Arabe counterpart, Miguel Lloyd, made several vital stops in the waning minutes. He denied Cristhiam Lagos, who was trying to finish a 2-on-1 break from close range in the 81st minute, and then produced a kick save on Kenny Cunningham in the 90th minute.
These two teams will meet again on September 21 at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose, Costa Rica.
