MIAMI, Florida – Arcahaie FC of Haiti will look to continue their magical run in the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League when they take on 2019 SCL champions Deportivo Saprissa in the semifinals on Friday evening at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma in San Jose, Costa Rica.
The winner will advance to the Final to face Alajuelense of Costa Rica on February 3.
Arcahaie’s journey to this stage of the tournament began in the Preliminary Round when Verdes FC of Belize withdrew, resulting in Arcahaie’s qualification for the Round of 16.
The Haitian club then posted a 3-1 win at Waterhouse of Jamaica to earn a quarterfinal date against Forge FC of Canada, who they defeated 4-2 in a penalty shootout to not only advance to the SCL semifinals, but also qualify for the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.
Arcahaie like to spread the wealth in attack, with four different players accounting for their four goals in the tournament. They also have one of the best GKs in the Caribbean in Guerry Romondt, who saved two penalties in the shootout win against Forge.
Romondt and the Arcahaie defense will need to be at their best to contain the defending champions, who have posted six goals thus far in the tournament in a 4-1 triumph over Municipal of Guatemala in the Round of 16 and a 2-0 victory at Honduran side Marathon in the quarterfinals.
While all six were scored by Johan Venegas, who departed the club last month, the Monstruo Morado still have plenty of weapons in attack, like FW Jimmy Marin and MFs Marvin Angulo and David Guzman.
The meeting marks the first ever match between the two clubs and the first time a team from the Caribbean has appeared in a SCL semifinal.
Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET and can be seen via TSN.ca/TSN App (Canada), TUDN (USA-Spanish), FS1 (USA-English), ESPN 2 (Central America) and Fox Sports 2 (Mexico).
