MIAMI, Florida – The first two weeks of action of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League have been completed in which a plethora of great goals have been scored. Here are the five best goals from the matches played in the Preliminary Round and Round of 16.
Anthony Novak, Forge FC vs. Municipal Limeno, Preliminary Round
Canadian Premier League side Forge FC found themselves in a tough spot in their Preliminary Round fixture with El Salvador’s Municipal Limeno. Locked in a 1-1 tie, the Canadians had to play the final half-hour a man down, but showed their resiliency and got a late winner through Novak. The Forge substitute received a pass in the area, took a great first touch and fired in a right-footed shot to earn Forge the 2-1 win.
Wendy Louis-jean, Arcahaie vs. Waterhouse, Round of 16
A place in the quarterfinals was on the line in this Caribbean clash, and Arcahaie enjoyed a very strong start thanks in part to Louis-jean’s crafty goal. With the Haitian club already leading 1-0 over their Jamaican opponents, a cross was floated into Louis-jean, who hit a right-footed volley that resembled a topspin lob in tennis, with the ball nestling inside the far post to give Arcahaie what would be the winning goal in a 3-1 final.
Hector Castellanos, Motagua vs. Alianza, Round of 16
There is just something about the SCL that brings out the best in Motagua at the most dramatic of moments. After outlasting Comunicaciones in an 18-round penalty shootout in the Preliminary Round, the Honduran side were down 1-0 to El Salvador’s Alianza going into second half stoppage time. But Motagua’s survival instincts would kick in, with Hector Castellanos making a run into the Alianza area and launching a left-footed laser beam into net. Motagua would go on to win the penalty shootout, 4-3, to advance.
Alvaro Saborio, Alajuelense vs. Cibao FC, Preliminary Round
Costa Rican club Alajuelense were well on their way to victory against Cibao FC of the Dominican Republic with a 2-0 advantage in the 82’, but Saborio would provide the cherry on top in the 82’ by scoring his second goal of the night with a well-struck right-footed volley. For Saborio, they were his first goals in Concacaf club competition since September 19, 2012 when he scored for Real Salt Lake against Tauro FC in the 2012-13 SCCL.
Andres Lezcano, Comuniaciones vs. Motagua, Preliminary Round
Long before the history-making penalty shootout between Motagua and Comunicaciones was resolved, the Guatemalan club took a 1-0 lead against the Hondurans through a fantastic header from Lezcano. An out-swinging corner kick in the 36’ was met by the rising Lezcano, who beat his marker and snapped a header that went blazing inside the far post to hand Comunicaciones the lead.
