PARAMARIBO, Suriname – Shaquille Cairo scored in the second minute of second half stoppage time to earn SV Robinhood of Suriname a dramatic 1-1 draw versus Club Atletico Independiente of Panama in the first leg of their 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League Round of 16 series on Tuesday night at the Andre Kamperveen Stadion in Paramaribo, Suriname.
There were plenty of chances for both sides throughout, but all the scoring would come in the final 15 minutes.
Roxey Fer and Isiah Helstone were presented with early scoring chances for Robinhood, while Jorman Aguilar and Angel Sanchez each had looks at goal for Independiente, but could not find the mark.
Robinhood GK Claidel Kohinor had to make a pair of saves in the second half to keep it scoreless, but his foul on Jose Fajardo in the area allowed Fajardo to convert a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead in the 77’.
Robinhood looked to respond right away and was bolstered by the dynamic play of left winger Jamilhio Rigters, who had a late shot deflected by Independiente GK Jose Guerra, but Cairo was there to pounce on the rebound for the dramatic score.
