SAN PEDRO SULA – Alfredo Stephens scored the lone goal to lift visiting Chorrillo FC to a 1-0 win over 10-man Honduras Progreso in the second leg of their Scotiabank CONCACAF League Round of 16 series on Wednesday night at Estadio Francisco Morazan.
With the result, Chorrillo earned a quarterfinal berth, 2-0 on aggregate. It won the opener 1-0 on August 1 thanks to Guillermo Sierra’s goal early in the second half.
Stephens rounded a defender to latch onto a bouncing throw-in by the right side of the goal and taking a touch off Honduras Progreso goalkeeper Woodrow West, before tapping into the open net with his third touch for the critical away goal in the 61st minute.
Things became more difficult for Honduras as Franklyn Morales was sent off with a straight red card prior to the ensuing kickoff.
Stephens nearly added a second in the 78th minute, when he rounded West after getting behind the Honduras Progreso defense. The Belize international custodian did well to recover and get a hand on the ball as Stephens lined up to shoot.
The host created solid opportunities to score.
Bryan Johnson threatened in the 53rd minute, but his dipping free kick was parried away by Chorrillo goalkeeper Miguel Vargas for a corner kick.
Four minutes later, Carlos Sanchez targeted the far post with a powerful shot from inside the box that deflected off Sierra for another corner.
In the final minute of the first half, Jorge Cardona made a darting run down the right flank, only for his shot to hit the outside netting.
