LA CHORREA, Panama – Herediano of Costa Rica downed Panama’s CD Universitario 2-1 to clinch a berth in the Scotiabank Concacaf League semifinals on Wednesday night at the Estadio Augustin Sanchez in La Chorrea, Panama.
With a 3-0 lead on aggregate heading into Wednesday’s quarterfinal second leg, Herediano was looking to avoid any drama, but CD Universitario proved a tough foe, only to eventually succumb 5-1 on aggregate.
After a trio of chances for Josiel Nunez, the Panamanians broke through in the 57’ when Herediano DF Keyner Brown redirected a deep cross into his own net, making it 3-1 on aggregate.
Minutes later, Omar Hinestroza nearly made it two with a shot that stung the crossbar.
However, Herediano kept its calm and Brown atoned for his earlier mistake by heading in Gerardo Lugo’s free kick in the 62’.
The Ticos then capped things off with a Jose Ortiz strike in the 73’ to earn the 5-1 aggregate victory.
