GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – Comunicaciones overcame an early deficit and a sending off to defeat fellow Guatemalan club Guastatoya 2-1 in the first leg of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League Round of 16 on Wednesday night at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores on Wednesday night in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Guastatoya started strong and picked up a big away goal in just the 17’ thanks to some playmaking from Mexican FW Luis Landin, who slipped a pass into Kendell Herrarte and the MF finished with aplomb for a 1-0 Guastatoya lead.
Comunicaciones looked to respond but it was not helped by a straight red card for Carlos Castrillo in the 28’ for a foul on Luis Martinez.
Still, Los Cremas kept plugging away and they would earn the equalizer in the 53’ when Jorge Vargas was fouled in the Guastatoya area and Agustin Herrera converted the penalty to level the score at 1-1.
The momentum stayed with Comunicaciones despite being a man down and it grabbed the 2-1 winning goal in the 78’ when Gerardo Gordillo followed up his blocked header off a corner kick with a poke into net for the winning goal.
