GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – Comunicaciones edged closer to a 31st Guatemalan league title after a 2-1 win over visiting Suchitepequez in the first leg of the 2016 Clausura final on Thursday at the Estadio Mateo Flores.

The Cremas extended their winning streak at home to five games, while Suchitepequez saw its run of three straight victories come to an end.

Nicaragua international Juan Barrera scored the game-winning goal with two minutes left in normal time. The visitor took an early lead through Omar Salazar, but Emiliano Lopez leveled shortly afterwards.

Suchitepequez went ahead 1-0 in the sixth minute, when a neat give-and-go in the box between Salazar and Geman Esquivel resulted in the former brilliantly curling a right-footed shot inside the right post from 13-yards out.

Five minutes later the host was on equal terms as Jose Manuel Contreras played a ball through the box from the right with which Lopez connected at the far post after darting between two defenders.

Just as it appeared the match would end in a draw, Comunicaciones struck with Barrera heading in at the left post off Carlos Figueroa’s headed flick.

The winner of the series, which concludes Sunday in Mazatenango, qualifies for the 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.
