DIRIAMBA, Nicaragua – Luis Fernando Coronel is a name that will forever live in Diriangen FC lore.
The Nicaraguan FW was the hero of Diriangen’s 26th domestic league title when he scored in the final seconds of second-half stoppage time to give Diriangen a 3-2 aggregate win over Real Esteli in the 2018 Nicaraguan Clausura final.
That title-winning campaign also earned Diriangen a berth in the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League and with preseason well underway, Coronel says that the Diriangen squad is motivated to leave its mark in CONCACAF play.
“I think that the team is preparing itself in the best way,” said Coronel in an interview with Nicaragua’s LigaPrimera.com.
“We are working hard in the preseason because it is the base for the rest of the season. We are going to give everything to win the championship,” added Coronel.
FW Daniel Reyes, DF Champhers Perez and FW Erlyn Ruiz are among the new faces dotting the Diriangen roster, and Coronel believes the club can expect solid contributions from the trio.
“I think that they have come to add their grain of sand for the good of this team. And as a group we have to try to help them so they feel comfortable and give the best of themselves,” said Coronel.
On a personal level, Coronel is eager to get started both on the domestic front and in the SCL, in which it faces Universitario of Panama on August 1 in the home leg in Costa Rica, before traveling to Panama for the return leg on August 7.
For Diriangen, it is its first CONCACAF tournament in 21 years when it reached the second round of the 1997 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
“I am very excited for everything that is coming up. It is a big commitment and we are working hard to give the best of ourselves, to excel and do a good job,” concluded Coronel.
