HEREDIA, Costa Rica – Herediano flexed its goalscoring muscles in its 2018 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinal tie versus CD Universitario with a convincing 3-0 victory on Wednesday night at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero in Heredia, Costa Rica.
Jimmy Marin opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a strong right-footed shot, before Yendrick Ruiz rifled in the second of the night for the Ticos in the 78th minute when he collected a pass from Gerard Edgar Lugo and hammered home a right-footed shot.
Lugo and Ruiz would team up again six minutes later when Lugo lofted a chip to Ruiz, who turned and fired into net for the 3-0 final scoreline.
While Universitario did have an effort go off the post in the 71st minute, the Panamanians were largely held in check after having posted seven goals in the previous round against Diriangen of Nicaragua.
The two sides will square off in the second leg next Wednesday, August 29 in La Chorrea, Panama.
