MIAMI, Florida – The 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League is just days away from kicking off and there are a number of records both at the individual and team level that could be broken over the course of the next three months.
Top scorers by player
The reigning scoring king in the SCL is Johan Venegas with seven goals, all of which were scored during the 2019 SCL when he helped Saprissa claim their first SCL. Venegas will be back in action in the 2020 edition, but there will be a fair share of challengers looking to dethrone the Costa Rican.
Despite being a defender, Juan Pablo Montes of Motagua has a nose for goal in the SCL, with five career goals in the tournament. The Honduran club has reached the finals of the last two editions and will be a candidate to lift the trophy in 2020 thanks in part to the goalscoring exploits of Montes.
Another player who could surpass Venegas is Edwin Aguilar of Tauro. The FW has five SCL goals in just six matches, all coming in the 2018 SCL. Concacaf nights bring out the best in Aguilar, who has 12 career goals in Concacaf play.
Top scorers by country
Players from 20 different countries have found the back of the net in the four editions of the SCL to date, but three countries continue to joust for having the most goals. Leading the way by the narrowest of margins is Costa Rica, with 47 goals including top individual scorer Johan Venegas (7). Right behind the Ticos is Panama, who have contributed 46 goals in the history of the SCL.
Another Central American country that could very well sit atop this list by the end of the 2020 SCL is Honduras. The Catracho nation has contributed 43 goals in tournament history and are just four away from pulling level with Costa Rica.
While they have never won the SCL, Motagua still rank first in the all-time table with the most victories by a club with nine. The Honduran club has twice appeared previously in the tournament and reached the Final in both instances (2018, 2019). Motagua also boast the most matches played in the SCL (16) and have accumulated the most points of any club in the SCL (31).
Several clubs will be looking to overtake Motagua in the all-time winning table, such as 2017 SCL Champion Olimpia (8 wins), Alianza of El Salvador (7 wins) and 2019 SCL Champions Saprissa (7 wins).
Most goals in a single SCL
It was no surprise that the expanded format to the SCL in 2019 yielded a record number of goals, with the 84 goals in the 2019 edition shattering the previous record of 76 set in the 2018 SCL. With all three former champions in the tournament in 2020 and some of the best goalscorers in Central America set to take the field, the 2020 SCL has all the makings of another record-setting tournament for goals scored.
Most goals between clubs from different countries
Whenever Honduras and Panama face off at the international level, fans are treated to an electric 90 minutes of football, and that excitement trickles down to the club level as well. In the SCL, there have been eight matches between clubs from Honduras and Panama and the result has been an astounding 20 goals scored, the most of any two-nation pairing.
Right behind with 19 goals is Nicaraguan vs. Panamanian clubs followed by Costa Rican vs. Panamanian and Salvadoran vs. Panamanian clubs with 18 each. Depending on the results of the Preliminary Round, those goal totals could well change in the Round of 16.
