SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras– First-year club Forge FC of Canada will be looking to make more history when it travels to San Pedro Sula, Honduras to take on Olimpia in the second leg of their 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League series on Thursday night at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.
As the first Canadian team to ever appear in the SCL, Forge has been impressive.
The Hamilton, Ontario-based club earned a 2-1 aggregate win over Antigua GFC of Guatemala in the Preliminary Round and followed that up with a 1-0 home win over 2017 SCL champion Olimpia last Thursday night.
The heroes for the Canadians were goal-scorer Chris Nanco and GK Triston Henry, who saved a penalty kick in the first half.
But on its home turf Olimpia is always a venerable foe and boasts a 2W-1D-1L record at home in the SCL, with six goals scored and just two against.
Leading the charge for Olimpia is Argentine attacker Cristian Maidana, who pulls the strings, while the likes of Junior Lecayo will be counted on to finish chances.
History is also on Olimpia’s side. The last time it faced a 1-0 deficit in the SCL, it rallied for a 3-1 win at home in the second leg of its 2017 SCL quarterfinal series with Alianza of El Salvador.
