LA CHORREA, Panama – Club Atletico Independiente of Panama is on its way to the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinals after defeating SV Robinhood of Suriname 2-1 in the second leg of their Round of 16 series on Tuesday night at the Estadio Agustin Sanchez in La Chorrea, Panama.
With the win, Independiente claimed a 3-2 win on aggregate over the two legs.
Independiente enjoyed a dream start and by the 8’ it had a 1-0 lead through Abdiel Ayarza. A free kick was played into the area and a flicked-on header led to scramble in front of goal, with Ayarza arriving on the scene to slam home a shot.
The lead for the hosts then doubled to 2-0 in the 35’, with Jose Fajardo receiving a pass from Angel Sanchez and firing into goal.
But Robinhood was not about to throw in the towel and suddenly the lead was cut to 2-1 in the 78’ when Roche Rosebel followed up a deflected effort from Mitchell Kisoor and scored.
Needing just one more goal to advance, Robinhood threw all numbers forward, but was unable to find the second goal, resulting in a quarterfinal berth for Independiente.
