MIAMI, Florida – Managua FC of Nicaragua will be out to continue their impressive run in the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League when they take on past champions Olimpia of Honduras in the Round of 16 on Thursday night at the Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Managua advanced past a round in the SCL for the first time ever when they edged CD FAS of El Salvador 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw between the two teams.
After eliminating a previous Concacaf champion in the Preliminary Round, another giant of the region awaits in Olimpia, a two-time Concacaf champion and winner of the inaugural SCL in 2017.
Yet the attacking performance that Managua displayed in the second half versus FAS should provide a confidence boost. Ricardo Mendieta provided an excellent finish for the Managua goal against FAS, and MF Pablo Gallego is an expert at opening up opposing defenses.
For Olimpia, the 2020 SCL marks their third appearance in the tournament after qualifying as the 2019 Apertura champion in Honduran football.
The Catrachos have a habit of advancing deep into the tournament. In addition to claiming the first SCL in 2017, the reached the semifinals of the 2019 edition, narrowly losing to eventual champions Deportivo Saprissa.
There is no shortage of talent on the Olimpia squad sheet, including dangerous FWs Yustin Arboleda and Jerry Bengtson, who have a combined nine goals in Concacaf club competitions.
The match is the first ever Concacaf meeting between the two clubs and will be Olimpia’s first encounter with a Nicaraguan club in SCL play.
Kick-off is scheduled for 10:30 PM ET and can be seen via TSN.ca/TSN App (Canada), TUDN (USA-Spanish), FS1 (USA-English), ESPN 2 (Central America) and Fox Sports 2 (Mexico).
