MONTERREY, Mexico – Liga MX side Monterrey announced via a press release on Thursday that it has signed Honduras international Alberth Elis.
The 20-year-old forward helped the Catrachos to a fourth-place finish at the 2016 Men’s Olympic Football Tournament earlier this month. He scored two goals in Brazil, including the game-winner against Korea Republic in the quarterfinals.
Elis, who had spent his entire professional career with Olimpia (61 games/25 goals), was selected as recipient of the 2015/16 Scotiabank Best Young Player Award, playing in four games and scoring two goals.
With Honduras, Elis was the joint-top scorer at the 2015 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship with four goals and has competed in the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup (4 games/0 goals) and the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup (3 games/goals). He also scored four goals in the 2015 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship and one goal in the 2013 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship.
The former Real España youth product is expected to play for Honduras next month in last the last pair of matches of fourth-round CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He has one goal in the competition, netting in a 2-2 draw at El Salvador on March 25, 2016.
Elis’ new club (Monterrey) and his old one (Olimpia) are both participating in the 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.
