MIAMI, Florida – On Monday night the Draw for the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League took place, yielding a number of must-see match-ups in both the Preliminary Round, Round of 16 and potentially into the latter stages of the tournament.
Here are some of the can’t-miss matches in the 2020 SCL.
Motagua-Comunicaciones, Preliminary Round
This series has all the makings of a classic, with 2018 and 2019 Finalist Motagua going up against one of the most storied clubs in Central American football in Comunicaciones of Guatemala. Motagua Head Coach Diego Vazquez has led to Honduran club to the brink of SCL glory in the last two editions, while Comunicaciones enjoyed a spirited run to the 2019 SCL quarterfinals.
Alianza-Motagua/Comunicaciones winner, Round of 16
There will be no respite for the team that advances from the tough Motagua-Comunicaciones series. After those grueling 180 minutes, to the victor goes a date with Salvadoran heavyweights Alianza in the Round of 16. If it proves to be Motagua, it would set up a rematch of last year’s thrilling semifinal between the two clubs when a resounding 3-0 home win earned Motagua a 4-1 aggregate victory and a place in the Final. Yet whether it’s Comunicaciones or Motagua, Alianza will be hungry to become the first club from El Salvador to reach an SCL Final.
Arcahaie-Verdes, Preliminary Round
Two SCL debutants will be locking horns in the Preliminary Round in what should be an exciting series between Haiti’s Arcahaie and Verdes of Belize. Neither Haiti nor Belize have ever had a team advance past a stage in the SCL, so history will be made on that front. Also of note will be that the winner earns a date with Jamaican club Waterhouse in the Round of 16. After defeating Portmore United 1-0 in the 2020 Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship, Arcahaie would like nothing better than to defeat another Jamaican club in Concacaf competition.
Independiente-Antigua GFC, Preliminary Round
Independiente of Panama and Antigua of Guatemala each got their first taste of the SCL in 2019 and now will be looking to make greater strides in the 2020 edition. Antigua’s 2019 campaign ended with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Forge FC of Canada in the Preliminary Round, while a valiant effort in the quarterfinals from Independiente against eventual champions Deportivo Saprissa came up just short, 4-2.
Saprissa-Municipal, Round of 16
This Round of 16 match-up is already set, with reigning champions Saprissa of Costa Rica set to take on Municipal of Guatemala. The Concacaf pedigree of the Monstruo Morado is beyond reproach and they will be undaunted by the task of defending their SCL title. Meanwhile, Municipal, one of the most decorated teams in Guatemalan football history, will be making their SCL debut and there would be no better way to send a message to the rest of the region that the Rojos are back than eliminating the 2019 SCL champions.
