SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Goals from Raul Penaranda and Marvin Monterroza earned Alianza of El Salvador a 2-0 win versus San Carlos of Costa Rica in the first leg of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinals on Thursday night at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador.
Alianza started strong out of the gates and took a 1-0 lead in the 16’ through Penaranda. The Albos played a free kick out wide left to Carlos Portillo, whose low-driven cross reached the right foot of Penaranda, with the Colombian pushing home a shot for the goal.
San Carlos looked to respond and came close to pulling level in the 21’, but was denied by a save from Alianza GK Rafael Garcia.
Alianza looked to extend their lead in the second half and it would come from the right foot of MF and team captain Monterroza.
San Carlos failed to clear a corner kick and Monterroza took advantage by collecting a pass, making a move to his right and unleashing a shot into the top left cornet of the net for a 2-0 lead, which held until the final whistle.
