PANAMA CITY, Panama – Yendrick Ruiz scored early in the second half to give visiting Herediano a 1-1 draw with debutant Plaza Amador in the 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League on Thursday night at the Estadio Maracana.
In the Group G opener – the only draw in eight Week One matches -- Sergio Oretga put the host ahead early, but the Costa Rican champion rallied to go unbeaten for the 20th time in its last 24 SCCL outings.
Ortega’s goal came in the 12th minute, when Carlos Pineda could not connect with a cross played behind him from the right edge of the six-yard box by Delano Welch. The ball took two bounces before Ortega raced in to knock it home with his left foot at the far post.
The sides were on level terms four minutes after the break as Ruiz netted his seventh career SCCL goal, a new team record, breaking the one he shared with Jorge Barbosa.
Plaza Amador nearly regained the lead in the 53rd minute, but after Ricauter Barsallo’s initial shot was saved by goalkeeper Leonel Moreira, Welch hit the woodwork off the rebound.
Group G returns to action on August 17 as 2015/16 runner-up Tigres travels to Herediano.
