PANAMA CITY, Panama -- Ernesto Sinclair snapped a tie early in the second half to lift host Plaza Amador to a 2-1 victory over 10-man Walter Ferretti to reach the Scotiabank CONCACAF League (SCL) semifinals at Estadio Rommel Fernandez on Thursday night.
The Panamanian side captured the series by the same score after a scoreless draw in the opener last week and will face the Olimpia-Alianza winner in September.
In the 55th minute, Plaza’s Richard Rodriguez powered a 25-yard shot that goalkeeper Denis Espinoza saved, leaving a rebound for Sinclair to slot home for the game-winner.
With the game 25 seconds old, Plaza took advantage of a Ferretti mistake to draw first blood. Jose Murillo intercepted Kennieth Vanegas’ poor headed clearance and hammered a shot from the penalty arc into the right corner.
Ferretti almost scored in the 11th minute, when a Robinson Da Silva shot deflected off the right foot of goalkeeper Eric Hughes and struck the right post.
The Nicaraguan got on the scoresheet in the 41st minute after Sergio Ortega tripped Robinson Da Silva in the box. Jose Beranrdo Laureiro converted the penalty kick, drilling his attempt into the upper left corner.
Ferretti was forced to play the final 15 minutes a man down after Cristiam Gutierrez was dismissed for a second yellow card.
Panama is only country with two teams in the SCL’s final four as Arabe Unido booked a spot on Wednesday night.
