SANTA TECLA, El Salvador – An early goal from Armando Polo was enough to earn Santa Tecla a 1-0 win over Real Esteli in the second leg of the Preliminary Round of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League on Tuesday night at the Estadio Las Delicias in Santa Tecla, El Salvador.
With the result, Santa Tecla has won its first ever two-legged series in Concacaf club competition with the away goals rule in its favor after a 2-2 draw on aggregate between the two sides.
Santa Tecla could not have asked for a better start, as Polo put the tie in the Salvadorans’ favor with a goal in the 9’. An initial shot from Polo was blocked, but quickly scooped up by Gerson Mayen, who found Polo again and this time Polo was able to convert for the 1-0 lead.
The visitors also had their fair share of chances the rest of the way, but it was a final minute clearance from DF Alexander Mendoza that proved pivotal, as Mendoza blocked a shot on the goal-line with GK Joel Almeida off his line.
Santa Tecla advances to the 2019 SCL Round of 16 where it will face A.D. San Carlos of Costa Rica.
