MIAMI, Florida – Real Esteli of Nicaragua will be looking to make more history when they take on Costa Rica’s Alajuelense in the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinals on Wednesday night at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
The Pinolero outfit won their first ever Concacaf series in the Round of 16 when they defeated 2018 SCL champions Herediano 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jorge Betancur.
It was a true team effort from Real Esteli, with the likes of FW Henry Garcia and MF Juan Barrera also chipping in with top performances, the former launching two shots and recovering two balls.
Alajuelense will be plenty motivated as well to record a win against their fellow Central Americans. The Ticos have not been in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League since the 2014-15 edition and a win would secure their place in the 2021 edition. For Real Esteli, their last SCCL appearance came in 2016/17.
Alajuelense rolled past Cibao FC of the Dominican Republic 3-0 in the Preliminary Round before edging Panama’s San Francisco 1-0 in the Round of 16.
Veteran FW Alvaro Saborio has two goals thus far in the 2020 SCL, while in the win over San Francisco, Costa Rican World Cup hero Bryan Ruiz made his SCL debut and collected an assist in spearheading the Alajuelense attack.
While the two sides have never met in the SCL, they have faced each other in Concacaf play, with Alajuelense earning a pair of 1-0 wins in the group stage of the 2012/13 SCCL.
Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET and can be seen via TSN.ca/TSN App (Canada), TUDN (USA-Spanish), FS1 (USA-English), ESPN 2 (Central America) and Fox Sports 2 (Mexico).
