SANTA TECLA, El Salvador – If the first weeks of preseason are any indication, Santa Tecla of El Salvador can expect big things this fall in the 2018 Apertura and the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League.

It all started back on May 30 when the club announced the return of MF Kevin Santamaria. The 27-year-old had spent the previous four years in Guatemalan football with Suchitepequez and Municipal but returns to Santa Tecla where he played 48 matches from 2012-14.

Along with Santamaria, Santa Tecla also announced the signings of DF Diego Jose Chavez and MF Jairo Henriquez.

The club also made a change on the bench, naming Cristian Diaz as the new Head Coach on June 22 prior to the start of its preseason training on June 28.

The influence of the new players and new Head Coach appears to be immediate.

In its first preseason match back on June 30, a sturdy defense and an opportunistic attack helped Santa Tecla defeat Atletico Marte 1-0 in a friendly.

A week later Santa Tecla squared off against the same opponent and emerged with an impressive 4-1 win in which Paraguayan FW Gustavo Guerreno showcased his goal-scoring skills with a hat-trick. Jacobo Kathan also got into the act with a goal.

Santa Tecla will kick off its campaign in El Salvador’s Apertura on July 28 when they face Audaz.

The club will then travel to Costa Rica for its 2018 SCL Round of 16 first leg tie against Herediano, followed by the second leg six days later in Santa Tecla.
