SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica held off a late charge from El Salvador’s Aguila to advance to the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinals following a 1-0 loss in Wednesday night’s Round of 16 second leg at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Despite the 1-0 defeat, Saprissa advances 2-1 on aggregate to the next round of the SCL where it will face Independiente of Panama.
Aguila nearly got its dream start of an early goal on 10 minutes when Santos Guzman swooped in to steal a ball, but his shot sailed just inches wide of the far post.
The pressure from the hosts continued and Saprissa GK Kevin Briceno was forced into a diving save of a Diego Coca shot in the 27’.
Aguila’s persistence finally paid off in the 78’ as Fernando Castillo broke through with the game’s first goal via long-range to cut the aggregate deficit to 2-1.
Aguila pushed hard for a second goal in hopes of evening the series, but in the end the Saprissa defense held firm to get the result that sends the Monstruo Morado to the quarterfinals.
