TIBAS, Costa Rica – Deportivo Saprissa pulled off a comeback for the ages to punch their ticket to the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League Final with a 4-1 win over Olimpia of Honduras in the second leg of the 2019 SCL semifinals on Thursday night at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma in Tibas, Costa Rica.
The Catracho club looked set to advance to an all-Honduran Final against Motagua, but three goals in the final 25 minutes, including two in the final six, earned Saprissa an epic 4-3 victory on aggregate.
Saprissa came out the more aggressive and were up 1-0 in the 32’ when 17-year-old Manfred Ugalde scored his fourth goal of the 2019 SCL by flicking in a header off a free kick.
The Monstruo Morado looked to continue the momentum, but Olimpia had other ideas and Jorge Alvarez leveled the score 1-1 in the 62’ when he dodged a defender and calmly slotted home a shot.
Saprissa refused to give up and re-took the lead 2-1 in the 69’ when Johan Venegas found Marvin Angulo, who fired in a right-footed shot.
Angulo would strike again in the 88’ when he curled in a free kick to make it 3-1, paving the way for the dramatic final minutes.
Saprissa would reap the rewards for their persistence, as David Ramirez swept in a right-footed shot in the 90+4’ to send the Estadio Saprissa into pandemonium, giving Saprissa the 4-1 victory and a place in the Final.
