KINGSTON, Jamaica – Despite a 2-1 defeat to Santos de Guapiles, Portmore United has advanced to the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF League quarterfinals with a 7-6 penalty shootout victory after the two teams finished tied 3-3 on aggregate on Thursday night at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

Ronaldo Dinolis gave the visitors the start they wanted in the 29th minute when he redirected a header into net to hand Santos a 1-0 lead in the match and level the aggregate 2-2.

Things got better for the Costa Ricans in the 41st minute and they took a 3-2 lead in the series when Bryan Lopez pounced on a loose ball and scored.

Portmore United would answer though and level the tie 3-3, as Maalique Foster scored on the brink of halftime by firing in a shot after a scramble in the box.

Neither team could find a winner in the second half, so things were decided from the penalty spot where Portmore United proved superior.

Portmore United will face Honduran side Motagua in the quarterfinals.
