SCL Finalists: Domestic League Preview (Sept. 29, 2017)

MIAMI – Neither Olimpia nor Santos de Guapiles – the 2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF League finalists – won their midweek matches.  They’ll look to secure maximum points from their respective domestic league games on Sunday.

CONCACAF.com looks at the weekend action:

OLIMPIA (Honduras)

Next 2017 Honduran Apertura match: Sunday, October 1, home v Honduras Progreso

Next 2017 SCL match (Final, First Leg): Thursday, October 19, home v Santos de Guapiles

After a 2-2 draw at Juticalpa on Wednesday, Olimpia (3W-3D-2L, 12 points) moved up to fifth place in the Honduran Apertura table.  The Leones, however, have won only once in their last six outings.  They will try to regain consistency on Sunday, when eighth-place Honduras Progreso (3-0-6, 9) visits the Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino.  In the midweek stalemate, Roger Rojas and Alexander Lopez, who have been excellent in the Scotaibank CONCACAF League, both scored their first league goals of the season.

SANTOS DE GUAPILES (Costa Rica)

Next 2017 Costa Rican Invierno match: Sunday, October 1, away v Perez Zeledon

Next 2017 SCL match (Final, First Leg): Thursday, October 19, away v Olimpia

Santos de Guapiles (4-4-3, 16) saw its two-match winning streak (and four-game unbeaten run) come to an end Wednesday in a 4-1 home loss to first-place Herediano.  The question now is how it will respond Sunday, with a tricky fixture at Perez Zeledon.  Both sides have 16 points from 11 games, but Santos owns a slightly better goal difference (+3 to +1).  Santos has only one loss in five road matches in the Costa Rican Invierno (1-3-1), defeating UCR, 2-0, in its last away outing.  In its season opener, Santos beat Perez Zeledon, 4-0, as Edder Munguio struck for a pair of goals.
