GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – Comunicaciones of Guatemala bounced back from an early deficit to defeat Honduran side Marathon 2-1 in the first leg of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League Preliminary Round on Thursday night at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City.

Bolstered by an impressive away supporters’ section, Marathon leaped out to a 1-0 lead in the 5’ as Edwin Solano followed up Yustin Arboleda’s header off the post and fired in for the score.

Comunicaciones looked to respond right away and thought it had an equalizer via header, but Marathon GK Denovan Torres made a last-second swat to prevent the ball from fully crossing the line.

After several near-misses in the first half, Comunicaciones was able to connect for a score early in the second half when Gerardo Gordillo’s header managed to cross the line to make it 1-1.

Minutes later in the 54’ it was 2-1 to the Cremas thanks to Jorge Vargas, whose composed right-footed shot finished off a well-constructed goal from the Comunicaciones attack.

From there, the Comunicaciones defense took over to seal the result.
