KINGSTON, Jamaica – Two goals in a span of six minutes earned Motagua of Honduras a 2-0 victory versus Waterhouse of Jamaica in the first leg of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Independence Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
The home side had a wealth of chances to open the scoring in the first hour but was unable to convert. Stephen Williams shot wide in 5’, before Motagua GK Jonathan Rougier made a top-notch save on what looked like a sure Andre Fletcher goal in the 13’.
Things carried into the second half when Colorado Murray’s effort hit the post in the 60’. But Motagua hung tough and would break the deadlock in the 65’ when Emilio Izaguirre’s free kick hit off the post and Marcelo Pereira was there to clean things up and poke in the rebound for a 1-0 lead in the 66’.
With the lead, the Catracho club could play to its liking and Kevin Lopez extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 72’ with a stunning left-footed strike.
A red card to Nicholy Finlayson in the 82’ made Waterhouse’s comeback task even tougher and Motagua was able to comfortably see things out to secure the win.
