VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Cristian Techera scored twice and Erik Hurtado once as the Vancouver Whitecaps earned a 3-0 win over Sporting Kansas City to take command of Group C in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League at BC Place Tuesday night.
Vancouver (2W-0D-0L, 6 points) avenged a 2-0 loss to Kansas City on Saturday in a Major League Soccer encounter. Sporting (0-1-1, 1) is winless its last five SCCL matches (0-2-3).
It was the first time in six SCCL appearances that the Whitecaps scored more than one goal in a match as goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi recorded the clean sheet.
The host took advantage of two Kansas City defensive lapses to strike twice within a four-minute span in the first half.
In the eighth minute, SKC’s Kevin Ellis passed the ball straight to opposing forward Masato Kudo, who immediately found Hurtado in the right side of the box. Goalkeeper Jon Kempin missed in an initial bid to swat away Hurtado’s subsequent cross and the 5-foot-2 Techera headed into the left side of the net from five-yards out.
Techera also scored the game-winner in the 1-0 win at Trinidad & Tobago’s Central FC on August 2.
Four minutes later, the Whitecaps caught Kansas City napping. Hurtado was on the receiving end of a 50-yard feed from midfielder Russell Teibert. As he raced toward the penalty area, Hurtado chipped the ball over Kempin from 22 yards for a two-goal advantage in the 12th minute.
Vancouver almost added to its lead as Kempin twice denied Jordan Smith in the 17th minute and Hurtado drilled a shot off the post a minute into the second half.
Kansas City pushed up and finally got itself untracked in the second half. Connor Hallisey forced Tornaghi to make a two-handed save in the 48th minute, while Diego Rubio Kostner’s close-range attempt traveled wide left in the 57th minute.
Techera added his second on a counterattack off a Matías Laba feed in the 64th minute.
These teams will meet again at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, on September 13.
