SAN NICOLAS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico – Tigres may have fell to Club America in April’s Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL) final, but slightly more than two month later, it’s ready to compete for another trophy.
On Sunday at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, UANL (2015 Liga MX Apertura champion) will square off against Pachuca (2016 Liga MX Clausura champion) in the Campeon de Campeones, an annual match that pits the champions of the short tournaments from the previous season against each other.
With an eagerness to get the 2016-17 campaign off to a positive start, defender Jorge Torres Nilo says that Tigres is hungry to lift another trophy. Neither of the 2016/17 SCCL participants have won the single-game competition previously.
“We are taking it as a really important competition,” said the Mexico international. “We know that we are coming from preseason and, as a match, it is going to help us for what is more important, which is the upcoming season. We are not taking it lightly. At the end of the day we want to win everything. We want to win the match.”
UANL will open its 2016 Liga MX Apertura campaign at Santos on July 17, while kicking off SCCL play with an August 17 meeting at Herediano. A meaningful encounter with the Tuzos is a perfect way to get into the swing of things quickly.
“They [Pachuca] have very good players up top, who are fast, unsettling and we are going to be aware of that,” Torres Nilo finished. “Although, we also have fast players and ones who can unnerve, I think it is going to be a good match and intense on all fronts.”
