#2: Santos de Guapiles 1-0 Arabe Unido
The semifinal tie between Santos de Guapiles of Costa Rica and Arabe Unido of Panama will long be remembered for the tremendous defensive performances put forth by both sides.
A scoreless draw in the first leg in Panama was followed a week later by a similarly tight second leg at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Santos GK Francisco Gomez and Arabe Unido keeper Miguel Lloyd were spectacular, each making a number of saves to keep things scoreless.
But just when it looked like the teams would be destined for a penalty shootout, Santos would strike for the tie’s lone score in the 86th minute.
A long ball was hoofed up by the Santos defense and the ball would bounce over a few heads before landing perfectly for the charging Kenny Cunningham to run onto and poke home past Lloyd for a 1-0 Santos lead.
From there the Santos defense would remain as firm as it had in the first 176 minutes of the two-legged series to give the Ticos a spot in the Final.
