MIAMI, Florida – The 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League is just around the corner, so to get ready for the tournament, Concacaf.com is looking back on the best matches in SCL history.
We begin with the top five matches from the 2017 SCL.
#5: Plaza Amador 1-0 Portmore United.
These two sides met in the Round of 16 in the inaugural edition of the SCL, with Portmore United pocketing a 1-0 win on home soil in Jamaica in the first leg.
A week later the two clubs would square off in the second leg in Panama City, Panama with hosts Plaza Amador looking to grab some early momentum, however the fine play of Portmore United GK Shaven Sean Paul kept the Jamaicans in control.
The Canalero club ever gave up though, and after another Paul save, the breakthrough would come in the 75th minute, as an alert Valentin Pimentel stuck his hip in front of an attempted clearance and redirected the ball into the Portmore United net.
It was at that moment that Plaza Amador GK Eric Hughes took over.
The two teams had to settle matters from the penalty spot, and Hughes came up big by making a diving save on the first Portmore United kick from Ewan Grandison.
After converting its four previous attempts and Portmore United making its next four attempts, all eyes were on Hughes, who could win the tie by converting his spot kick. The Plaza Amador GK never had a doubt and scored, sending Plaza Amador to the next round.
