VANCOUVER, Canada -- Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced Tuesday that the club has transferred striker Fabian Espíndola to Mexican side Necaxa for an undisclosed fee.

It proved to be a short stay in Canada for the Argentinean, who departs without playing a game after being acquired on July 20 from D.C. United in exchange for financial considerations.

"We acquired Fabian last week as we felt he would be a good addition to our team," said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. "After we finalized the trade, we were presented with an offer from Club Necaxa, which provides us with a significant amount of allocation money, and puts us in a better position than we were prior to this trade. We discussed the offer with Fabián and he agreed to the move. We will continue to look for another attacking player, as we are always looking to improve our club for the short, medium, and long term.”

Espindola originally joined MLS with Real Salt Lake in 2007, winning the 2009 title, before spending the 2013 season with New York Red Bulls and the past two-and-a-half seasons with D.C. United. This year, he has made 15 regular season appearances, scoring four goals.

In SCCL play, Espindola has six goals (2 with Real Salt Lake, 4 with D.C. United) in 18 games.

“I was preparing for my move to Vancouver – which I know is a great city – when we were presented with an offer to sign with Club Necaxa,” commented Espíndola. “This new deal gives my family security and stability as my previous contract was set to expire at the end of this season. I am thankful to Whitecaps FC and wish them all the best.”

During his first six seasons in the league, Espindola helped Real Salt Lake capture the 2009 MLS Cup and reach the 2010/11 SCCL final.

The 31-year-old began his professional career in 2005 with Boca Juniors, where he was a member of that year's Copa Sudamericana title-winning team. In 2006, he joined C.A. Talleres of the second division. Before eventually heading to MLS, Espindola spent two seasons in Ecuador, featuring for Aucas (2006) and Deportivo Quito (2007). Also, during the 2009 MLS offseason he signed with Venezuelan Primera División side Deportivo Anzoátegui.
