CD Universitario (formerly known as Chorrillo FC) will play for the second consecutive time in the Scotiabank SCL Concacaf League after winning the 2017 Panama Apertura Tournament.
In its previous participation it reached the quarterfinals after eliminating Honduras Progreso with a 2-0 aggregate score in the Round of 16 before being eliminated by finalists Santos de Guapiles in the semifinals.
The night of August 19, 2014, is a date that fans of CD Universitario will not soon forget.
Two years after his first participation in the Concacaf Scotiabank Champions League, in which they finished the group stage 2012-13 with a record 0W-0D-4L, CD Universitario achieved one of the greatest victories for a Panamanian club in the history of Concacaf
On the second day of the 2014-15 SCCL edition, the then CONCACAF champions Cruz Azul from Mexico arrived in the city.
But unlike his 6-0 defeat at home in the SCCL 2012/13 against then-champion Monterrey, CD Universitario produced 90 minutes of magic to defeat La Máquina 1-0 and get the club's first victory in the tournament.
It was only the beginning of one of the most competitive group stage campaigns of recent times.
Rolando Blackburn was the top scorer of the LPF Opening 2017 (11). He scored a hat-trick against Atlético Veragüense (3-0).
