Jesus Gallardo’s late goal gave Pumas a lift at Leon, while Tigres doubled up on familiar foe Club America in an electrifying six-goal skirmish. CONCACAF.com takes a look at the weekend action involving the 2016-17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinalists.
Leon 0, Pumas 1
Pumas improved to 2W-0D-1L in the 2017 Liga MX Clausura with a 1-0 at Leon on Saturday. The three points were delivered in dramatic fashion as Jesus Gallardo struck in the third minute of second-half stoppage time for his first goal of the season. In December, the 22-year-old midfielder was highlighted in a CONCACAF.com article on the 2016/17 SCCL’s best young players.
Tigres 4, Club America 2
In a rematch of last season’s final, defending champion Tigres (1-1-1) topped visiting Club America, 4-2, on Saturday for its first victory of the 2017 Liga MX Clausura. Ismael Sosa (1’, 83’) and Lucas Zelarayan (36’, 55’) each bagged a brace in a winning effort. Zelarayan’s first goal, which gave UANL a 2-1 lead, was brilliant free kick from the left that ricocheted off the far post and into the net.
Necaxa 1, Pachuca 0
Pachuca’s two-game winning streak to open the 2017 Liga MX Clausura came to an end Saturday, when Maximiliano Barreiro struck for the only goal in the 53rd minute. The Tuzos (2-0-1) were eliminated by Necaxa, 2-1 on aggregate, in last season’s quarterfinals.
Atletico Veraguense 1, Arabe Unido 0
Defending champion Arabe Unido (1-0-1) suffered its first defeat of the 2017 Panamanian Clausura, falling 1-0 at Atletico Veraguense. There’s good news on the horizon for head Sergio Guzman -- five of his players are returning from Panama duty at the 2017 Copa Centroamericana (DF Angel Patrick, MF Amilcar Henriquez, MF Edgar Yoel Barcenas, MF Jose Gonzalez and FW Enrico Small).
Cartagines 3, Saprissa 0
Following a 1-0 win on Wednesday at Carmelita thanks to a Daniel Colindres goal, Saprissa (2-0-2) fell 3-0 to host Cartagines on Sunday in 2017 Costa Rican Verano action. Mariano Torres was ejected in the 42nd minute for the Monstruo Morado, which dropped a decision by a 3-0 score for the first time to Cartagines.
